Atlanta, the Elk Capital of Michigan...
Deer hunting, bird hunting,
fishing and snowmobiling all make Atlanta and the surrounding public land
a popular place. Named the Elk Capital of Michigan, Atlanta invited people
to see Michigan's unique elk herd and hosts the limited elk hunt each December.
Elk viewing is possible by pulling quietly into forest openings off the
rural roads north and west of Atlanta in early morning and late evening.
Clear Lake State Park offers
both a beach and picnic area and a full service campground. Elk Ridge Golf
Course is an exceptional course carved out of a mature forest of pines.
There are many state forest campgrounds on area lakes that offer quality
outdoor experiences.
The Atlanta Area Chamber
of Commerce invites you to events including sled dog races in January,
an SCCA sports car rally in February, an Easter egg hunt in the spring,
the July 4th celebration with parade, contests and fireworks, the Montmorency
County 4-H Fair in mid-August, a haunted house for kids in October, the
deer pole contest during November firearms opening day and an elk pole
contest during the December hunt. The primary event is the Atlanta Elk
Festival held the last weekend in September each year, offering a parade,
contests, auction, craft sales, food vendors and other activities
on the streets of Atlanta.
