Microsoft Windows - Reformatting and reloading Windows:

Before you begin:

  1. Backup any files you want!!!

  2. Make sure you have the Windows and Driver disks you will need, as well as the Windows Product Code.

  3. Make note of the number of actual hard drives (these instructions are written for a machine with one drive, drive letters will be different if there are more than one)

 

Boot from CD to the virtual A drive:

  1. Set boot order to CD first: In the system Bios (press DEL or something during the memory test) reset the boot order to CD first.

  2. Insert the Windows CD and reboot

  3. It will find the CD and ask if you want to boot from it - Yes

  4. It will give three options: choose Boot to Dos with CD support

  5. You will land at a dos A: prompt

 

Use fdisk to remove existing partitions and create new ones:

  1. From the A: prompt, type FDISK

  2. It will ask about Large Drive Support - YES

  3. In Fdisk, delete all the active partition(s)

  4. Create a new primary dos partition

  5. Format the partition(s):

  6. Reboot the machine, choosing Boot from CD and Boot with CD support

  7. Type D: to goto the CD

  8. Type cd win98 to goto the win98 folder

  9. Type format c: /s to format the first hard drive

  10. If there is a second hard drive don't use the /s switch on it

 

Copy the contents of D:\win98 to C:\win98:

  1. Type c: to goto the hard drive

  2. Type md win98 to create a folder

  3. Type cd win98 to move to that folder

  4. Type d: to jump back to the CD

  5. Type cd win98 to move to that folder (if you are not already there)

  6. Type copy *.* c: to copy the win98 contents to the same location on the hard drive

  7. After the copy, reboot

 

Reset the boot order and begin setup from C drive:

  1. Go into the Bios again and change the boot order back to A: then C:

  2. After you have booted from the hard drive you will be at a C prompt

  3. You can remove the Windows CD now.

  4. Type cd win98

  5. Type setup to begin the windows setup

 

Installing Windows:

  1. You will get an initial question with 4 install type options, choose the first one (default).

  2. Next you will be asked a 2-option question about installing components - choose to custom install components:

  3. Turn off OpenGL Screensavers

  4. Turn on Themes

  5. Turn on everything in Accessories, except Briefcase

  6. Turn on Backup and Character Map in System tools

 

Once Windows is installed:

  1. Install drivers for each piece of hardware (including motherboard if you have them)

  2. Install all the other software you need to

  3. Delete unneeded icons from the desktop

  4. Put the icons that will be needed on the desktop and/or in the quicklaunch area

  5. In Control Panel/Power Management, reset all the settings to Never

  6. In Display Properties:

  • Clouds in background (stretch)

  • Screensaver Off

  • Effects/Show window contents when dragging

  • Web/View desktop as webpage OFF

  • Settings/resolution: 1024x768 for 17"; 800x600 for 15" monitor

  • Advanced: reset refresh rate (if it is connected to it's correct monitor)
