Replacing a Modem:
Make note of the make, model and com port of the old
one (in Control Panel/Modems)
Power down
Remove the old modem and put in the new one
On startup it should find the new device and ask for
drivers. The Internet Tools disk will have the correct drivers in a subfolder. It will ask
about searching for drivers. Choose Browse and point it to the correct folder on the
Internet CD.
Once the modem drivers are install and the machine is booted up, test the modem:
Goto Control Panel/Modems/Diagnostics,
choose the new modem and click on More Info. After a pause it should give you a list of AT
strings from the modem. If it cannot, you may need to restart the machine before it can
talk to the modem.
Once the modem is tested, try the Internet:
Go into Internet Explorer properties and the
Connection Tab/Settings/Properties and change the modem to the new one.
Try the Internet and see if it works ok, and what
speed it is connected at.
If you will be keeping the new modem:
Goto Control Panel/Modems and remove the old one
Reboot
Retest the internet
If you will be keeping the old modem:
Swap the old one back in
Goto Control Panel/Modems and remove your
modem
Reset Internet Explorer to use the old modem
Reboot
Retest the Internet.
